Egg-cellent accessible cycle routes for families in York this Easter!

With the Easter break just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to get out and explore York by cycle. Whether you’re looking for a gentle ride with younger children or a longer adventure, there are plenty of accessible routes that offer beautiful scenery, wildlife spotting, and family-friendly paths. Here are some of the best routes in and around York to try this Easter.

Cycle the Solar System route

If you’ve cycled in York with your family before, you’ve likely explored the University Of York Solar System route as it’s well-loved by local cyclists. A scale model of our solar system (created when Pluto was still a planet!) with planets and satellites at to-scale intervals along the way. A brilliant mostly road-free and educational ride for adults and kids!
Stop off at the Brunswick Organic Nursery in Bishopthorpe for a coffee, snack or drink, maybe stock up on plants and be on your way again!
The route is 6.4 miles each way so set aside a few hours with rest breaks or go as far as your little one’s legs can take them!
It’s one of our favourite routes to share with families and we’re sure you’ll love it too!

  • Why it’s great: This (mostly) traffic-free, tarmac path follows the old railway line and features a scale model of the solar system, making it an engaging ride for all ages.
  • Surface & Accessibility: Smooth, wide path with gentle inclines, suitable for handcycles, trikes, and tandems.
  • Facilities: Benches along the route for breaks, plus a café and toilets in Riccall and Bishopthorpe.

2. Rawcliffe Meadows and Clifton Ings

If your family enjoys nature, the Rawcliffe Meadows and Clifton Ings route is a must. Beginning at Rawcliffe Park & Ride, this ride takes you through beautiful floodplain meadows teeming with wildlife. The traffic-free paths are ideal for children, and the looped trails mean you can tailor the ride to your family’s abilities. Look out for birds, wildflowers, and the occasional Highland cow grazing in the meadows. There’s even a fantastic playground near the starting point for a post-ride break.

  • Why it’s great: Features a dedicated cycle path, a pump track (for those who fancy a challenge), and access to the traffic-free riverside path into York.
  • Surface & Accessibility: Mostly tarmac and compact gravel, with easy access from the Rawcliffe Park & Ride.
  • Facilities: Toilets, picnic areas, and a playground.

Askham Bog

Askham Bog is an idyllic nature reserve tucked away in the southwest of the city. Championed by Sir David Attenborough himself, it’s well-loved and visited by locals seeking a bit of peace and greenery.

A gentle cycle ride with the kids will take you past the Sun, the beginning of the iconic Solar System route (see above), and under the A1036 on a protected cycle route. After passing the Askham Bar Park & Ride, you’ll arrive at the car park for the bog. Park your bikes and wander down to the decked walkway, exploring the local fauna and flora.

This short adventure is a lovely mix of cycling and nature exploration, and families will appreciate the chance to combine cycling with some wildlife spotting.

  • Why it’s great: A gentle ride to a nature reserve, ideal for combining cycling with a short nature walk.
  • Surface & Accessibility: The cycle path to Askham Bog is smooth and accessible. The reserve itself has a decked walkway, but some areas may be narrow for larger cycles.
  • Facilities: Cycle parking at the reserve, plus a picnic area.
